Wed. Sept. 26

Leaving Vienna today as we start to winding down the trip. Today we head for a midway point to stay the night and tomorrow sometime we will end up in some airport hotel to catch our plane back to the US.

We are going to head towards to Augsburg today. The road is skirting those illusive Alps pick which we can seen in the hazy violet distant. Guess we will have to come back again to see them up close.

Augsburg is another old historic town in Bavaria.

As soon as we inquired of the owner/chef in English, he immediately asked the one other customer in the joint, “speaken ze English?” When the customer shook their head no, he turned back to us and worked with us to get our order. We said we were looking for a vegetarian lunch. “Vegetariesche?”, he asked. We said yes and he confirmed by asking, “no flesh?” pointing to the big rotisserie lamb. We agreed and he proceeded to put together one of the best vegetarian meals we’ve had on this trip. The next question was “on brot?” for which their was a choice of two kinds, or on a plate, for which we did not have a common word but were able to understand by pointing to it. Paul got his on bread, and Debbie got hers on a plate. It was a great assortment of perfectly grilled veggies, rice, tzatziki, feta cheese, and some slaw-like greens. It was even more yummy than the picture appears.

Then we hit the road again. There was tons of traffic and an accident that tied us up for an hour or so.

I started looking up possible hotels for the night, Augsburg was filled, Ulm was full, too. We drove east a bit more and still all the inns were full. I remembered that Mars sent a note that Octoberfest had started, so we assumed that was the reason. We finally found a spot as dark was falling upon us. They even had vegetarian meals on the menu, so we got our meal and evening weiss bier.

There were some great little towns along the way. Many with wonderful old timber construction.
We have shorter drive back to Frankfurt tomorrow so we will go back and take more photos in the morning.
