Monday Sept. 24th.
We are leaving Hungary today and are pointing the car towards Vienna. We will be stoping at a 308 AD Roman City near the border of Austria, Hungary & Slovakia.
Our Route takes us from the wine and agricultural areas in the north west, back through Budapest, and into the north east through some mountains. As we go we can see the early traces of Autumn has left its mark here.
This is the border crossing, which is now open.
We are breaking up the drive by stopping at Györ for some tea and one last taste of yummy Hungarian pastries.
We made it to the Roman City only to find that it was spread out over a number of small towns and villages. Additionally all the museums and sites would be closing shortly. Based on what we did see of the museum and sites along the road this was a HUGE city and the remains are amazingly well preserved. It is important to know that this “site” will take hours or even 2 days to fully see and appreciate. So we had to move along and just peer over fences along the way to Vienna. We will have to come back to Austria someday to have a real look at the place.
We arrived at Vienna as night was falling, took a few tries but we did find a place to stay for the next few nights. Found a great restaurant really close to the hotel and went to bed. It was a long day.
