After a good night’s rest, I can now relate a bit more about our travels yesterday and what’s ahead. The first decision for traveling around the perimeter of Iceland is whether to go clockwise or counter-clockwise. We chose to go clockwise around the island as it would get us more quickly to the parts of of the country we hadn’t visited yet. The next few days are mostly landscape and photography days, which Iceland never fails to deliver on.
So, heading westward from Reykjavik, we traveled aong the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, that is the next large north-western body of land that pokes out of maps north of the capital city. Our plan was to make it to a campground located in the city of Grundarfjordur, which we did. If you’re following along with us, you may want be amused by checking this pronunciation website, https://forvo.com/word/. I added the location of our campsite for you, https://forvo.com/word/grundarfjörður/ If you see photos of the iconic mountain, Kirkjufell here in Grundrafjordur we are camping right under it, but the light so far this morning, not with us. Although it could be in a few mins.
As one expects when visiting Iceland, we experienced just about every sort of weather she has to offer: all the seasons in our first day. There was the wind of course, there was some rain, dramatic clouds over the mountain tops, some icy snow in the mountain tops, and sunshine at just the right moments, in time to grab some photos.
Since we had been this way before we didn’t linger as long in this area, but we did stop at a few places we missed on our last visit to the area (on our first trip to Iceland) and couldn’t resist revisiting a few our favorite spots. The elements of weather can effect the appearance of the landscape in such dramatic ways everywhere, but here in Iceland even more so. The green moss on the black mountains can appear olive drab one min, then light up to a bright neon green the next when the sun touches it. A mountain top covered in a glacier can appear to have a spotlight shinning upon it, gleaming in all its glory then, a second later, it will be enveloped in clouds, its brightness snuffed out and a vail pulled over it. Was there even a mountain top there just seconds ago?
