Our flight left Dulles at 8:30, so we got there early. We kept saying it will be nice to sit and eat a leisurely meal after a hectic day of packing. We started looking for a nice-for-an-airport restaurant and the first area was all closed up, even the Philly steak place. We went to our gate thinking to find something else there, but it was the same, all closed. We found one sandwich place who’s closing grate was only partially closed, sign said it closed at 6:00, so we tried to get a sandwich. The person closing up was really nice, but said kitchen was all cleaned up and sandwich stuff was away. As a consolation he offered us a cookie. Of course, I took the cookie and was glad to have it.
Apparently, COVID has cut down on so much that travel it’s not worth it for airport eateries to stay open all the time.
Boarding started promptly, we discovered we both had isle seats, across from one another. By the look of the waiting area it appeared that the plane was not going to be full. Paul like a spider started scoping out the rows for possible seat exchanges. He scored us a row of seats in an emergency exit a row. Woot! Extra legroom, and under seat area for laptop bag while flying. However there will be no meals on the plane during the flight, not even the usual little bag of peanuts.
We made it to Iceland just before 6:00 am, a few mins ahead of time. Got though customs amazingly fast, and were given a vile to take with us for our COVID test. They swabbed our mouths and a poked new access points to our brains. We were informed we would would get our results back between 6 & 24 hours. And they asked which hotel we would be quarantining in for the day. We said we were going to be in an RV by ourselves. Somehow, that worked fine, maybe because we had our shots.
Our camper guy was to meet us at 8:00 am, instead of the prescribed 10:00 am time per leasing the RV.
So we waited around for a few hours. And he was there promptly at 8:00 picking us up in our RV. We went back to the shop did all the paperwork, and overview and hit the road about 11:00. We drove to the local grovcery store not too far from the airport, and remembered we hadn’t gotten our results back, so maybe we would take a nap there until we got them.. Amazingly a few mins later we got notifications on phones that our tests were back and we were covid free. So into the grocery store we went, the only ones in the place wearing masks, stuck on after wearing all day and night. We got ourselves out of the city, and settled into a roadside vantage point for a few hours nap before hitting the road and the sights.
More on the adventures of the day in the next post, its now midnight the sun is still shinning as if it were mid afternoon, and we need to get some sleep. Tomorrow we are heading to the north west Western Fjords.
