Hello Family and Friends,
No photos for today sorry about that. Maybe I’ll add one of today’s campsite tomorrow morning.
So, this long planned RV adventure to Florida is twofold.
One of the original ideas was to get Paul to some sunny location to warm his bones enabling him to get him over the hump of our typically cold winter months. The other idea was to join friends who are staying on their boat in Jacksonville for a traveling Happy Hour and to do a bit of biking on the area trails with our friend Bob, who is also part of the Florida Happy Hour adventure.
When we planned this trip, we had no idea that this year our local winter would never really materialize and that we would he heading into a very hot 90 degree southern heatwave in Florida!!
I got up about 4:30 this morning, breakfasted, did last minute packing, and we hit the road about 6:30 am. In the RV, hitting the road doesn’t mean getting on the highway right away. It means driving to where we can hook up the car, then getting propane and gas for the RV, and then rolling on down the highway.
Unlike our last trip south in 2019 with took us 8 hours to get to Richmond VA, we have had incredible luck with traffic on this trip so far and made it almost to the South Carolina border by 4:30’ish. 443 miles in nine hours of driving is a full day in the RV, but still afforded time for Paul to have a Power Nap along the way.
As we passed under a bridge in the outskirts of Washington DC, there were some Cherry Trees in bloom planted there. Was a cheery sight.
Interstate 95 parallels some of the old north-south routes. There were stretches where you could still see the old commercial buildings, abandoned as the traffic shifted, but still standing like architectural ghosts to tell the story of full-service gas stations, mom-and-pop shops, and home-cooking restaurants.
Another interesting thing we saw along the way was a long convoy of military vehicles. They look to be a mix of personal carriers and some kind of truck based tank thing, most likely on their way to Fort Bragg.
If the traffic is still kind to us, with only 350 miles or so left to go, we could be in by FLA tomorrow afternoon. Our reservation at Hanna Park is not until the 24th, so we could arrive a day early and try our luck getting a spot or we could dillydally and maybe take a longer route to explore a bit. We are towing a car, so going to some city like Savannah for the day is bit of a problem. I guess we’ll play it by ear and see what tomorrow brings our way.
Was about 85 degrees when we arrived at our campground, way warmer than when we left home. It’s cooling off now, a not too humid 71, low will be 56.
