We awoke early to a rainy morning. Paul went off to the city pool for a good soak in their hot baths, outside in the dark and the rain, and I stayed planning our route for the day.
We had breakfast by the window and wondered if it would rain on us all day as predicted. It did not. About 30 minutes east of Selfoss, it slowly started to clear up. We had a mix of clouds and chilly winds but no rain.
Although we did get pretty wet at Seljalandsfoss. An amazing waterfall which are easy to access from the road. You can walk up to and even behind them, which we did. Good thing Paul thought to bring our waterproof clothing. We were remembering our first trip, in the spring of 2004, when we were very underprepared. In Jan. 2011, we were way over prepared, and this time, we were just right. As we’ve been told in Iceland, there’s no such thing as bad weather, the only problem is not having the right clothes.
We drove all along the southeast coast to Hofn, stopping every few feet along the way to take photos. We will go back the same way, as we are on the ring road and the only way is forward or go back. Since we leave on Sat., we must go back. But now we will see the other side of the stuff we past through the front window rather than the rearview mirror. Even stopping every few feet, there was a lot we missed or passed by.
We are already thinking about how much time we will need for a complete trip around the island. Iceland takes a lot longer to get around even though it looks small on the map and the ring road is well paved.
More tomorrow.
